The Library Book Club invites the Regent community to put aside those journal articles and quantitative studies for about twenty minutes each day and rediscover the pleasure of reading and sharing ideas about books. As always, the spring lineup offers something for a variety of reading interests, including spiritual works and classic and contemporary literature. All of our selections can be read with as little a commitment as twenty minutes per day, although completing (or even starting) the books is not a requirement to attend the meeting.

On Friday, February 10, Dr. Corné Bekker will lead a book discussion of No Future without Forgiveness, by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Desmond Tutu was the Anglican archbishop of Cape Town and one of the most important figures in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa.

In 1995 President Nelson Mandela prevailed upon Archbishop Tutu to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, South Africa’s unique attempt to come to terms with the crimes of the apartheid era by offering perpetrators amnesty and forgiveness in exchange for truthful testimony. No Future without Forgiveness is Archbishop Tutu’s memoir of his work on the commission and a testament to his conviction that “we can indeed transcend the conflicts of the past, we can hold hands as we realize our common humanity.”

The Library Book Club is sponsoring the discussion of No Future without Forgiveness as a complement to the 2012 University Global Roundtable on February 9, which will feature as guest speaker, Pastor Mosa Sono of Grace Bible Church in Soweto.

The discussion of No Future without Forgiveness will take place on February 10 at 12:00 PM in the Library Conference Room. The Library currently has three copies of the book on order. My name is Heather Brist. Many may know my name or have seen my face working at Regent Library’s front circulation desk for two and a half years; however, I now serve as InterLibrary Loan/Document Delivery Assistant. I genuinely have a love for books and am very thankful to be surrounded by them daily.

In May 2011, I graduated from Regent’s Undergrad English program with a creative writing cognate. Currently, my favorite form of writing is poetry. I own my own blog called breatheinred.com, where I write poetry about the “Bride of Christ” concept. Over the summer I entered an amateur poetry contest with World Poetry Movement and won the editor’s choice award for a poem called “Theologian’s Dream”.

I look forward to learning more about the Library and to building new relationships here at Regent University.

On December 15th, Library Systems Manager Mark Zillges was one of eleven Regent staff members to be honored with the 2011 President’s Award for Excellence. This award is given to outstanding staff members who have been nominated by their colleagues and then selected by a committee made up of the previous year’s award winners. The nominating criteria are innovation, integrity, and excellence.

According to Monica Bocarnea, some of the accomplishments that impressed the Awards Committee include:

• “Creating and implementing new technologies to facilitate access to and use of Library resources.”
• “Launching a mobile application that allows students and faculty to utilize the University Library via an iPhone or other mobile device.”
• “[Working] on a number of projects that have resulted in thousands of dollars in cost savings for the Library and the University.”

In addition to these professional achievements, Monica noted that his colleagues wrote that Mark is “always willing to interrupt his work to help a librarian or student with a technology-related problem” and that he “goes out of his way to show compassion.” Finally, the Awards Committee singled out his coworkers’ affirmation that “Mark pursues excellence in everything he does” and that “consistently, he goes beyond the call of duty to make sure that all the Library systems are running smoothly.”

My name is Laura Thomas, and I will be serving as Assistant to the Dean of the Library here at Regent University. I am a graduate of Spring Arbor University’s Gainey School of Business, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. My academic background is in management, marketing, event planning, and project coordination.

Prior to coming to Regent University, I served as the Marketing Director for the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, where I had the honor of working with other individuals who had a strong passion for professional theater, education, and the arts. I continue to enjoy attending theater and musical performances whenever possible.

In 2009 God lead me into partnership with my wonderful husband. Over the past couple of years, my husband and I have grown substantially in Christ, and moving to the Hampton Roads area has been an excellent next step in that growth, both individually and as a couple.
